Chapman University students walking to class on a sunny day

Chapman University – The College Spotlight

If your student loves campuses that feel like real communities — walkable, beautiful, and full of So Cal energy — Chapman University should be on their radar. Chapman sits in the charming, historic district of Orange, California, about 15 minutes from Disneyland and a short train ride from both Los Angeles and San Diego. With around 8,000 undergraduate students, Chapman has the resources of a research university and the intimacy of a smaller college. That combination, especially on the West Coast, is harder to find than you’d think.

I had the chance to hear directly from Chapman’s admissions team at a presentation, and I came away with a lot of useful, specific information that I want to share with you. So let’s get into it.

About Chapman University

Chapman University opened its doors in 1861 with ties to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), though it welcomes students of all backgrounds and beliefs — more on that in a moment. And the campus itself is genuinely lovely. The Musco Center for the Arts, a 1,600-seat concert hall, is impressive. The same architect who designed the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles also designed the Musco Center. That detail tells you something about Chapman’s commitment to the arts and to doing things with intention.

Beyond the arts, the campus also has a Makerspace where students can work with woodworking tools, 3D printers, and sticker-making equipment. And for students who need to get around, Chapman runs shuttles to Anaheim-area housing and local grocery stores, and the train station right next to the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts connects students directly to LA and San Diego. For San Diego families, especially, that access matters.

Academics at Chapman

Chapman University academic building

Chapman runs on a 4-1-4 academic calendar — two traditional semesters with a January “interterm” in between. Class sizes are small, and the student-to-faculty ratio reflects the personal learning environment Chapman creates. They create a curriculum centered around hands-on, real-world application, and the emphasis on mentorship between faculty and students is genuine.

Before I dive into specific programs, one thing I want to flag for parents: Chapman wants to be known as a STEM school, not just a film school. Engineering programs are growing (Chapman hasn’t yet earned accreditation for Engineering, so keep that in mind if your student is considering that path), and Computer Science is expanding intentionally. They want to roughly double their Computer Engineering admits in the coming years. If your student is interested in those fields, review the curriculum and opportunities; the programs are growing and they want strong candidates.

Notable Academics at Chapman University

Argyros School of Business and Economics

Of all Chapman’s programs, this is one of its flagship programs and for good reason. Argyros Argyros holds the #1 ranking among private business schools on the West Coast, and the resources back that up. The school has 12 Bloomberg Terminals — the same financial software used on Wall Street — and the Leatherby Center, which operates like a real-world Shark Tank environment for entrepreneurship. Students can pursue concentrations in Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Marketing, and more.

One important heads-up: the business program is a BS, meaning it’s math-intensive. Chapman’s admissions team is very clear that they want to see strong math preparation — at least Pre-Calculus, ideally Business Calculus. If your student is interested in Argyros, make sure their transcript reflects that preparation.

Dodge College of Film and Media Arts

When it comes to film, Dodge is one of the most respected film schools in the country, and admission is significantly more competitive than Chapman’s overall rate — about 7% — so students applying to Dodge should treat it with the same weight as a highly selective university. The program comes with a dedicated career center and sits steps from a train station that gives students direct access to the LA entertainment industry.

Schmid College of Science and Technology

On the science side, Schmid is home to the Great Challenge Initiative, which frames scientific inquiry around real global problems. It’s a strong fit for students motivated by purpose-driven research and seeking small-class access to faculty mentors early in their academic careers.

Pre-Law

For students planning to attend law school, Chapman offers strong pre-law programs and its own Fowler School of Law on campus. Having Fowler School of Law right on campus gives Chapman undergraduates something most pre-law students don’t get — direct access to legal research, faculty mentorship, and pipeline opportunities.

Chapman University’s Honors Program

Chapman University’s Italian Architecture

Chapman’s Honors Program has smaller, more intensive classes that only honors students can access. Another big perk is priority registration, which is important for students who want to graduate in four years. So, if your student is academically motivated and wants a more rigorous, discussion-based experience, this is worth exploring during the application process.

Academic Flexibility and Themed Inquiry

Chapman uses something called Themed Inquiry, a group of classes that effectively function as a minor. Every student chooses one of nine Themed Inquiry areas, which serves as an interdisciplinary requirement rather than a rigid set of courses. It’s a creative approach to general education that tends to appeal to students who resist being put in a box.

Speaking of general education: Students can apply AP and IB credit toward GE requirements, which parents of high-performing students will appreciate. In addition, Chapman requires one course in Global Studies, which can be satisfied through one of three inquiry pathways: Global Studies, Citizenship/Community/Service, or Language. As for flexibility, switching majors is generally straightforward within a school — less so between schools — which is typical for universities of this size.

Admission Requirements for Chapman

Chapman is test-optional, and in a recent application cycle, 72% of applicants chose not to submit scores. For those who did, the average SAT was 1350 and the ACT range was 30. The average weighted GPA for admitted students was 3.94.

A few things I want to highlight:

Chapman tracks demonstrated interest. Chapman pays attention to whether your student has engaged with the school — campus visits, emails, information sessions, etc. That’s not unusual, but it’s worth being intentional if your student is strongly considering the university.

The supplemental essays matter a lot. Chapman’s admissions team has been explicit: strong supplementals are how students show genuine interest. Chapman requires strong supplemental essays for Presidential Scholarship consideration. Don’t treat the supplemental essays as an afterthought; they are a very meaningful part of your application.

Early Action is the preferred path for strong students. Chapman’s admissions team often views EA applicants more favorably if they present a strong academic record.

Decision Plan Deadline Notification
Early Action (EA) November 1 Mid-December
Regular Decision (RD) January 15 Late March
Early Decision (ED) November 1 Mid-December

Chapman accepts approximately 30% of applicants across most majors. Dodge Film sits around 7% — treat it as a separate, highly selective application

Campus Life and Residential Living

Chapman has a two-year housing requirement, and 92% of first-year students live on campus — so your student will be surrounded by motivated peers from day one. Chapman organizes first-year residence halls into Living Learning Communities (LLCs) by academic department, with floors available for undeclared students as well. Every floor has study rooms, and amenities include free laundry, air conditioning and heat, and free parking. Students use Panther Bucks and meal swipes at buffet-style dining.

By junior and senior year, students transition to apartment-style housing with a roommate of their choosing — a natural progression that mirrors a real-world living situation. For a private university in Southern California, the housing setup is genuinely solid.

Athletics, Greek Life, and Student Activities

Chapman University athletes compete in Div III

If students are looking to cheer on their favorite sport, Chapman competes at the Division III level with 21 varsity teams, including football, plus club and intramural sports — a great option for students who want to keep competing without the intensity and time commitment of Division I.

Beyond athletics, about 30% of students participate in Greek life, and Chapman’s chapters are notably philanthropic. One chapter raised $200,000 for its cause. Chapman also has a student radio station, student government, and a range of clubs and organizations across various interests.

Student Support Services

This is an area where Chapman genuinely delivers. A few highlights:

The Interfaith Center has three Christian chaplains, one Jewish Rabbi, and one Muslim Sheikh. This creates robust support for students of faith across traditions.

The Affinity Center and DEI Center serve students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Mental health appointments are unlimited — students can access counseling without a session cap, which is increasingly rare and genuinely important. And during finals, Chapman brings in puppies and kittens for stress relief. Who wouldn’t want that kind of furry support, right?

On the career front, support goes well beyond a generic job board. The many career centers offer lifelong services, meaning alumni can access career support after graduation. The SERP program offers paid summer internships, and business students regularly land Wall Street internships. With Chapman’s location between LA and Orange County, the internship pipeline is very strong.

Study Abroad

About 55% of Chapman students study abroad — well above the national average. What really makes Chapman’s program stand out, though, is its price-match guarantee for study abroad programs, which goes a long way toward making it financially accessible. Options include semester-long programs, summer programs, and the January interterm (included in tuition). For families considering the full college experience, think of this as a substantial perk.

Financial Information

Chapman’s published cost of attendance runs approximately $82,000 per year. The average merit and need-based aid package is around $30,000, which brings the net price down considerably. Top-performing students have received as much as $40,00 in scholarships in the past.

Chapman awards merit scholarships based on GPA, transcript rigor, and application strength. At the top of the merit-aid ladder, students find the Presidential Scholarship, and as I mentioned earlier, weak supplemental essays will disqualify a student from consideration regardless of their GPA. Chapman also offers a full-ride “Give Back” Scholarship for students who have experienced foster care, incarceration, or homelessness. Chapman awards departmental scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $12,000 later in the cycle, typically in March and April.

Who Is Chapman a Great Fit For?

Chapman University’s picturesque walkways and buildings

Chapman works especially well for students who want a close-knit campus community with genuine access to faculty, real-world resources, and proximity to two major media and business markets. Specifically, it’s a strong fit for the business-minded student who wants Bloomberg Terminals and a Shark Tank environment on day one. It’s an obvious choice for the film student who wants one of the most respected programs in the country with a train to Hollywood outside the door. And it’s a compelling option for the student who wants Southern California without getting swallowed by a 40,000-person campus.

If your student has strong grades, writes compelling essays, and is genuinely excited about what Chapman offers, this is a school worth researching.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chapman University

Is Chapman University hard to get into? Chapman’s overall acceptance rate is approximately 30% for most programs. Chapman is selective but genuinely reachable for well-prepared students. Dodge College of Film and Media Arts is significantly more competitive at around 7% and should be treated as a reach. Strong GPAs (the average admitted student has a 3.94 weighted GPA), rigorous coursework, and well-written supplemental essays are the most important factors in the application.

Does Chapman University offer merit scholarships, and how do I qualify? Yes — merit scholarships range from $14,000 to $36,000 per year and are based on academic achievement and application quality, not test scores. Strong supplemental essays are required to be considered for the Presidential Scholarship. Departmental scholarships are also available; Chapman typically awards these in March and April. Chapman does not guarantee to meet full financial need, so running the Net Price Calculator is an important step for families.

Is Chapman University test-optional? Yes, Chapman is test-optional. In a recent cycle, 72% of applicants chose not to submit scores. For students who did submit, the average SAT was around 1390 and the average ACT range was 29–30. Test scores do not affect merit aid eligibility.

What is the Chapman University application strategy I should know about? Apply Early Action if your student is a strong candidate — it’s non-binding and gives you the best shot at merit aid and favorable review. Chapman tracks demonstrated interest, so encourage your student to engage with the school intentionally. And do not underestimate the supplemental essays. Chapman has been explicit: the supplements are where students show whether they’ve genuinely done their homework at the university, its programs, and unique opportunities.
